Social inclusion

“A socially cohesive society is one where all groups have a sense of belonging, participation, inclusion, recognition and legitimacy.” – United Nations

Social inclusion is the process of improving the terms on which individuals and groups take part in society, particularly where they have been disadvantaged on the basis of their identity, their access to housing and financial products, or limited opportunities to achieve a real quality of life.

As the UN points out, inequality threatens long-term social and economic development, harms poverty reduction and destroys people’s sense of fulfilment and self-worth. This in turn can breed crime, disease and environmental degradation.

We invest in companies that are actively trying to improve the level of social inclusion across societies, from gender equality in the US to accessible mortgages in India. Here's an example of one of the companies we have invested in.

Building a better future with Bright Horizons

Bright Horizons* was founded to provide an innovative solution to the lack of affordable, high-quality, childcare for working families. Their mission is to continue to make a difference to children, families and employers, and to provide the highest quality early care and education for each child in each nursery, every day.

Throughout the United Kingdom, they have a portfolio of more than 300 community and workplace nurseries. They partner with many respected organisations in both the private and public sectors to provide workplace nurseries and back-up care programmes which cover children, adults and elders. They have pioneered the provision of emergency dependent care through its back-up care programmes, and have made significant achievements in this field, including the operation of the only dedicated back-up care nursery in Europe.

Through its foundation, Bright Horizons has been making a difference in the UK for 15 years. Bright Spaces are warm, enriching, safe play environments for vulnerable children affected by abuse, domestic violence, parental imprisonment and ill-health. Their 86 Bright Spaces benefit almost 25,500 children, providing them with a safe place to learn, have fun, build positive relationships and heal from trauma.

The value and income from a fund’s assets will go down as well as up. This will cause the value of your investment to fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you originally invested.
